A special program of "adapted military service" permits Martinican conscripts to remain in the French Antilles, receiving vocational training and contributing to local development.

Martinicans benefit fully from the generous package of welfare programs available to all French citizens, covering health, retirement, widowhood, and large families.

Given the high rate of unemployment in Martinique, the workfare program plays an important role in ensuring a minimal income level for the least privileged.

A joint commission made up of members of the general and regional councils controls local economic development. As part of France, Martinique is part of the European community, and has benefitted over the years from development funds made available through the community.

One third of the population converges in this city daily. Local branches of nongovernmental organizations such as Amnesty International, the Red Cross, Doctors of the World, and Catholic Rescue channel Martinican philanthropy throughout the world.

The Relative Status of Women and Men. Machismo, a long-established tradition within West Indian society, still permeates Martinican society. There is a long matrifocal history of single female-headed households, which since have been heavily subsidized through government family allowance funds.

Women retain power and influence in the private domain but in the more public spheres few women with some exceptions in the fields of education and culture occupy positions of high authority.

Contraception has created a "fertility revolution," decreasing the child bearing average from almost six children in the s to slightly over two in the s.

Since the s over one-half of Martinican women have entered the workforce, where they are disproportionately represented as salaried employees in the services sector where they are employed as servants, clerical workers, and teachers.

Martinican women are three times as underemployed and more unemployed than men. One-fifth of women have achieved middle class economic status. In principle, Martinican couples marry by mutual consent on the basis of love.

Particularly in village society, this typically follows a period of premarital co-residence and, frequently, childbirth.

Families often apply subtle pressure to ensure that their eligible children "marry up" or at least do not "marry down" in terms of class and, especially, race as measured by skin color.

Legal formalities for marriage and divorce are those of France; declarations of common law marriage concubinage may be made at town hall.

Approximately two thousand marriages are performed yearly in Martinique; between three hundred and four hundred divorces are processed.

Little more than one-third of eligible age Martinicans age 18 for men, age 15 for women are in fact married. Domestic Unit. The domestic unit in Martinique has evolved somewhere between the nuclear and extended family.

Couples live together with their children without the benefit of formal matrimony, and nearby relatives often assist with child care.

Approximately one-third of single mothers are heads of the household and depend on relatives for child care and housework. Feminist challenges notwithstanding, it has been a longstanding practice in Martinican society for men to take mistresses.

Inheritance follows the laws of France. In practice, particularly due to a high frequency of "illegitimate" heirs, following death the division of land and real estate may be subject to dispute and protracted litigation.

Child Rearing and Education. Child rearing is strict and often includes corporal punishment. In households where the father is present, it is generally he who is in authority.

Martinique benefits from the same highly developed child care infrastructure and school system in place in France.

Higher Education. Even before the establishment of the University of the Antilles—French Guiana in Schoelcher pursuing a higher education in France was the goal of upwardly mobile Martinicans.

University and professional degrees convey high status in local society. University education and professional training abroad particularly in France carry more weight in local eyes than do equivalent educational experiences in Martinique.

Formality and social distancing characterize most interactions between strangers in Martinique. Language is the principal means by which social distance is established and maintained.

Even though Creole is the lingua franca it is much more polite to address the other, at least until a sufficiently close relationship is established, in French.

It can be considered disrespectful to initiate conversations in public spaces i. If one can speak French, addressing a stranger in Creole is to acknowledge that person as socially inferior.

Respecting French language norms of politeness such as second person usage of the more formal vous as opposed to tu is also a must.

Shaking hands is part of local etiquette. Informal interactions call for more intimate social exchanges.

These include double and even triple and quadruple cheek kissing, even between members of the same sex. While double cheek kissing parallels that of French society in its frequency, it is performed in a distinctly Antillean style: more slowly and with greater head turning for a more perpendicular cheek-to-lip encounter.

Religious Beliefs. Ever since the establishment of French rule Roman Catholicism has been overwhelmingly predominant. In recent years evangelical Protestantism e.

Bahai, Jewish, and Muslim faiths also have their own sites of religious and cultural congregation. Throughout and beyond the slave era a parallel system of belief and practice, known as quimbois , has existed alongside Christianity.

Quimbois encompasses plant and herb remedies, sorcery, and spiritual healing, and is embedded deep within popular culture. A version of nineteenth century Hinduism, brought to the West Indies by south Indian immigrants, still survives in small temples and shrines where the burning of incense, garlanding of statues, and offering of sacrifices are still practiced.

Both Hindus and quimboiseurs ordinarily consider themselves also to be Catholic while the local Rastafarians—a sect that began in Jamaica and worships the late emperor, Haile Selassie—break more squarely with Western religion.

Religious Practitioners. An archbishop presides over forty-seven parishes and over 60 priests. Rituals and Holy Places. In recent years there has been annual revival of the Hindu mela.

Death and the Afterlife. Death announcements are a regularly scheduled part of the daily official radio program.

Funeral rites invariably follow Roman Catholic practice and, especially in villages, include public funeral processions in which men are uniformly dressed in black suit, white shirt and black tie.

Jour des Morts Day of the Dead , when people gather in cemeteries after dusk to light candles at grave sites, is observed 2 November, the day after All Saints' Day.

Modern medicine, administered through the Administration of Health and Social Services of France, has supplanted rural medical beliefs and practices relying on herbal cures.

Widespread belief in quimbois sorcery and the associated concepts of the evil eye and Produce and goods for sale at an open-air market in Saint-Pierre.

Traditional meals are a combination of French and Creole cuisines. Although originally grounded in Catholic ritual encompassing, in particular, Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday Carnival has become a more secular and boisterous festival.

Distinctive and often wild costume and behavior are on display, as groups vie in parade for attention and appreciation. On Mardi Gras regalers dress in red; the following day, in black and white.

Music and dance "wake the dead. Vaval's ritual bonfire at Wednesday dusk marks the end of the raucous festivities. Support for the Arts.

Festivals for artists and musicians, competitions and prizes, and concerts and institutional acquisitions support every art genre.

Explorers and missionaries Father Labat being the most renowned introduced seventeenth century Martinique to the world. Graphic Arts.

Legacies of Carib Indian culture survive in basket weaving and artisinal pottery from the colonial era continues but the Trois-Ilets Pottery has been modernized.

Performance Arts. Zouk has largely supplanted the biguine of the past although the group Malavoi preserves a traditional instrumental style.

A distinctive style of drumming is gwo-ka. The Grand Ballet of Martinique maintains the island's folk heritage, mostly for the tourist audience.

Research institutes of France in Martinique include those for general science and development, geography, agronomy, geology and mineralogy, and oceanography.

The Martinican campus of the University of the Antilles-French Guiana offers two tracks of study: law and economics; and letters and social sciences.

He discovered the site and we spent hours at the computer discovering together the other side of his pool. He is bicultural with a new understanding in history, geography, culture and folklore.

A sense of belonging thet we could hold strong. Thank you for the most important details- from religion to art and sciences to even thr picture of the beach in the north of my island where I his mother was wery happy to relate the eruption of the volcano in in Saint-Pierre.

Thank you. You made us happy, very happy Thank you so much! You have made my life a whole lot easier when it comes to French projects!

My grade is saved, thanks to you! If it were not for this site my assignment on Caribbean Studies would not have been started, muchless to be completed.

Thanks alot. Brad Canales. Awesome compilation of information. It's so hard to find good information on the Antilles, since everything that ever comes up is a travel agency website.

This really helped for my International Baccalaureate French Oral examination. Ghyslaine ROC. Dear you all Can you, please, tell me what is the exact definition of the term "Creole" as an ethnic group in Maritinique, and where to find a proper dictionary of Martinican "Creole"?

I love this article. It helped me also on my french project. I'm in 10th grade and hope I'll get a good grade on it Thanks alot!!!!!

Hey um Hi, do anyone know if desquez, or dezques is a last name associated with the island of martinique? Thanks-- this helped with my report a lot!

This was everything I needed for my final oral presentation for my summative. It was great and had all the information i needed.

Dr freddy oscar di paula cadremi bfg. This site really helped me with my French project. I was able to find all the information I needed right here.

Nice comparison Francesca! Both islands are just great! You absolutely had right with the diversity of beaches in Martinique, and white-black sand beaches are gorgeous.

I especially loved the beach Dufour, because often we can meet sea turtles there and swim with them!

Actually, public transport in Guadeloupe is better now, at least at Grande-Terre part of the island. If you would be traveling to Guadeloupe once again, you can check some transport tips on my blog.

We spent a week in Deshaies. Great food, very pretty, not as commercial as the main island in Guadeloupe and so the night life is very subdued.

I rented a car and drove around both main islands. I personally prefer Basse Terre, where Deshaies is. In any case, this was the nicest place we have been in the Caribbean, so far.

It helps to speak French. Also, we felt very safe compared to other trips. Now looking forward to combining Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique.

I actually just recently booked the hotel you mentioned for Guadeloupe! What nightlife places did you find around the hotel in Guadeloupe!

Looking forward to having a good time in both countries I could not choose! I wish I could remember for Guadeloupe! But if you did book that hotel, the front desk will definitely be able to give you pointers!

Great article! I just got back from Guadeloupe and really enjoyed it! Did you end up having to buy a car or scooter? For an English female going to teach English for a whole year, who is also a fluent French speaker, would you recommend Guadeloupe or Martinique — and why?

It really is a personal decision. It should push you in the right direction. I have a flight to both. In Martinique, yes. I include nightlife options in my Guide to Martinique.

This was perfect. My question to you is this: Did you go solo? This is awesome, thank you so much! Both islands look fabulous! What a hot deal back then too!

A friend has visited there 30 plus times on business. She loves the place. Thanks for sharing! This definitely assisted me in my decision on which island to visit during the winter.

What are your thoughts on getting assistance in Guadeloupe if you only speak English? Glad to hear that Rashida!

I definitely recommend you try to learn a bit of French to get by, and download a translation app before you go! I am really looking forward to your guidebook!

I am really interested in Martinique because I have roots there. But I am very worried about the language barrier.

I just want to a place to reset recharge and enjoy a beach or two and good food. Was looking into the trios ilet area! Grabbed a cheap flight in November !

Hoping for the best! I am going to Martinique next week Friday for 3 days with my girlfriend. I find your blog to be extremely helpful. I did realize during my research that Martinique is still developing in tourism but I think that is the best time to visit countries as you get to experience it in its raw state.

Great info Francesca, thanks. I would love to try the Bokit too. Hi Andy! Thanks for reading! Hopefully it sparked a little wanderlust!

Hey, so glad to read from you about our lovely Martinique. I work in the dive center at Bateliere and i recognized My beach on your first picture.

I love island hopping. Before I moved to the states, I island hopped at least twice a month. I hope you all to enjoy your visit with us!

Best bokits in Martinique are at Snack Boubou in the bourg of Ste. Thanks for the tip! If I ever needed a reminder that I need a vacation, this was it!

The pictures are beautiful. Hopefully it will be Martinique, or Guadeloupe! That would be me book the ticket to which everyone was cheaper and then figure out what I was going to do.

I love just showing up and exploring places to see what I can find. Need to look into those flights.

Hopefully you get a chance to check the flights out! I heard the restart in November. Both islands sound amazing! If I had the time, I would definitely try to travel to both, especially if they are so close together.

The ferry sounds like a good option. I heard wonderful things about Martinique so I always check out a place that others have been to first. Both seems very beautiful so I guess I will have to spend time of both of these beautiful islands.

Not going to miss out on the fun. Just 30 minutes apart makes it ideal as well. That Bokit sounds like one helluva sandwich.

I hope you get the chance!! Either one would be an awesome vacation!! So much great information here!

You hit on all the questions I would have researching a trip to these beautiful islands. The beaches look absolutely incredible.

Thank you for all that information, it helped me a lot for the french project!!! Martinique, which is part of the Lesser Antilles, is an overseas region of France that boasts both French and West Indian influences to enjoy.

With more nonstop flights from the East Coast heading to the Island Norwegian Air recently launched direct routes from Boston, New York City and Fort Lauderdale , Martinique is becoming increasingly more popular with tourists in search of a fresh spin on a typical Caribbean getaway.

The Anse Cafard Slave Memorial is a moving tribute to a group of would-be-slaves whose lives were lost at sea when the ship that was sneaking them onto the island sank in the night off the coast of Le Diamant.

There are numerous small islands , particularly off the east coast. The island is volcanic in origin, lying along the subduction fault where the South American Plate slides beneath the Caribbean Plate.

The oldest rocks are andesitic lavas dated to about 24 million years ago, mixed with tholeiitic magma containing iron and magnesium.

The Atlantic, or "windward" coast of Martinique is difficult for navigation by ships. A combination of coastal cliffs, shallow coral reefs and cays, and strong winds make the area a notoriously hazardous zone for sea traffic.

The Caravelle peninsula clearly separates the north Atlantic and south Atlantic coast. The Caribbean, or "leeward" coast of Martinique is much more favourable to sea traffic.

In addition to waters off of the leeward coast being shielded from the harsh Atlantic trade winds by the island, the sea bed itself descends steeply from the shore.

This ensures that most potential hazards are too deep underwater to be an issue, and it also prevents the growth of corals that could otherwise pose a threat to passing ships.

The north of the island is especially mountainous. The south is more easily traversed, though it still features some impressive geographic features.

Because it is easier to travel to, and due to the many beaches and food facilities throughout this region, the south receives the bulk of the tourist traffic.

Luce, the department of St. Anne and down to Les Salines are popular. The northern end of the island catches most of the rainfall and is heavily forested, featuring species such as bamboo , mahogany , rosewood and locust.

The south is drier and dominated by savanna-like brush, including cacti , Copaiba balsam , logwood and acacia. Anole lizards and fer-de-lance snakes are native to the island.

Mongooses Herpestes auropunctatus , introduced in the s to control the snake population, have become a particularly cumbersome introduced species [33] as they prey upon bird eggs and have exterminated or endangered a number of native birds, including the Martinique trembler , white-breasted trembler and white-breasted thrasher.

Bat species include the Jamaican fruit bat , the Antillean fruit-eating bat , the Little yellow-shouldered bat , Davy's naked-backed bat , the Greater bulldog bat , Schwartz's myotis , and the Mexican free-tailed bat.

In , Martinique had a total GDP of 8. Its economy is heavily dependent on tourism, limited agricultural production, and grant aid from mainland France.

Historically, Martinique's economy relied on agriculture, notably sugar and bananas, but by the beginning of the 21st century this sector had dwindled considerably.

Sugar production has declined, with most of the sugarcane now used for the production of rum. The bulk of meat, vegetable and grain requirements must be imported.

This contributes to a chronic trade deficit that requires large annual transfers of aid from mainland France.

Additionally the government charges an "annual due" of 1—2. Tourism has become more important than agricultural exports as a source of foreign exchange.

Fort-de-France is the major harbour. The island has regular ferry service to Guadeloupe, Dominica and St. The road network is extensive and well-maintained, with freeways in the area around Fort-de-France.

Buses run frequently between the capital and St. The country code top-level domain for Martinique is. The country code for international dialling is The entire island uses a single area code also for landline phones and for cell phones.

Martinique had a population of , as of January Emigration was highest in the s, causing population growth to almost stop, but it is comparatively light today.

Religion in Martinique [38]. The majority population is Catholic, which, is represented in each commune or village and has 49 parishes. Jews arrived in Martinique following the arrival of the first European colonists.

Islam made its appearance in Martinique in the s. The official language is French , which is spoken by virtually the entire population. In addition, most residents can also speak Martiniquan Creole , a form of Antillean Creole closely related to the varieties spoken in neighboring English-speaking islands of Saint Lucia and Dominica.

It continues to be used in oral storytelling traditions and other forms of speech and to a lesser extent in writing.

There was a time when the use of Creole was forbidden in schools and even within families, with French was the only language accepted.

Though it is normally not used in professional situations, members of the media and politicians have begun to use it more frequently as a way to redeem national identity and prevent cultural assimilation by mainland France.

Following traditional French custom, many businesses close at midday to allow a lengthy lunch, then reopen later in the afternoon. Today, Martinique has a higher standard of living than most other Caribbean countries.

French products are easily available, from Chanel fashions to Limoges porcelain. Martinique has been a vacation hotspot for many years, attracting both upper-class French and more budget-conscious travelers.

Martinique has a hybrid cuisine, mixing elements of African, French, Carib Amerindian and Indian subcontinental traditions. A strong tradition of Martiniquan desserts and cakes incorporate pineapple, rum, and a wide range of local ingredients.

Martinique has a large popular music industry, which gained in international renown after the success of zouk music in the later 20th century.

Zouk's popularity was particularly intense in France, where the genre became an important symbol of identity for Martinique and Guadeloupe.

There's also notable influence of the pan-Caribbean calypso tradition and Haitian kompa. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
